Coplanarity

Automated pick and place machines require all contacts on the integrated circuits to be coplanar, including the pins or ball grid arrays. If any one of these components is out of position, the circuit boards will be mismanufactured.

Detecting contact points that are not coplanar allows parts to be rejected before they are inserted into a circuit board, saving the cost of downstream errors and costly repairs or rejections.
