Coplanarity

Automated pick and place machines rely on all contacts on the integrated circuits including the pins or ball grid arrays to be coplaner.  In any one of these components is out of position then circuit boards will be mismanufactured.   Detecting contact points that are not coplanar allows parts to be reject before they are inserted into a circuit board saving the cost of downstream errors and costly repairs or rejections.
